Docker Desktop using too much disk on Mac? How to reclaim it
Where it is
This one has no fixed folder; clean it from inside the tool itself.
What it is
Docker Desktop on Mac runs containers inside a Linux virtual machine, and everything that VM holds (images, containers, volumes and build cache) lives in a single virtual disk file in Docker's data folder. There's no folder of images you can browse and delete from Finder.
Why it gets so big
Pulled images, stopped containers, dangling layers from rebuilt images and build cache all accumulate silently. Volumes from old projects, such as database data, stay until you remove them explicitly.
Is it safe to delete?
Not by deleting files. Removing the disk image wipes every image, container and volume at once, including any data stored in volumes. Instead, check what's using space with Docker's disk-usage command and remove what you don't need with its prune commands. Images and build cache can be pulled or rebuilt, but be deliberate with volumes, which can hold data that exists nowhere else.
Tip
Docker Desktop's Resources settings include a virtual disk limit, which caps how large the disk image can grow.
Clean it with the tool’s own command
docker system df
docker system prune
