Gemini CLI chat history in ~/.gemini/tmp: safe to delete?
Quit first: gemini
Where it is
~/.gemini/tmp
What it is
Gemini CLI stores state for each project in its own folder under ~/.gemini/tmp. These folders hold saved chats and logs, plus checkpoints that let you restore files to how they were before the CLI edited them, when checkpointing is enabled.
Why it gets so big
Every project you've run the CLI in gets its own folder, and checkpoints keep snapshots of your files, so many projects or long sessions add up.
Is it safe to delete?
Review first. Deleting a project's folder removes its saved chats and checkpoints for good, so you can't resume those conversations or restore files from them. Your actual project files are unaffected. Quit any running gemini sessions before cleaning.
Tip
The folder names are hashes rather than project names, so sorting by modification date is the easiest way to spot stale ones.
