Xcode Archives taking up space: is it safe to delete them?

Check before deletingMay still be useful; Thermo moves it to the Trash by default, so you can change your mind.

Where it is

  • ~/Library/Developer/Xcode/Archives

⏱ Only items untouched for 30 days

What it is

Each time you use Product > Archive, Xcode saves an .xcarchive containing the built app and its debug symbols (dSYMs). These show up in the Organizer, sorted by date, and are what you distribute or upload to App Store Connect.

Why it gets so big

Every release and test build you archive is kept until you delete it, and each one contains a full app plus its symbols. Teams that archive often for TestFlight build up a steady pile.

Is it safe to delete?

Only selectively, which is why it's flagged for review. Archives can't be regenerated: rebuilding the same code produces different debug symbols, so crash reports from a shipped build can't be fully symbolicated without its original archive. Delete archives for builds that never shipped or that no one runs anymore, and keep those for versions still in the field unless their dSYMs are stored elsewhere.

Tip

Before deleting old archives, check that the dSYMs for shipped versions have been uploaded to your crash-reporting service.

du -sh "$HOME/Library/Developer/Xcode/Archives" 2>/dev/null

Delete it by hand

Run in Terminal. Deleting cannot be undone, so check the paths first.

find "$HOME/Library/Developer/Xcode/Archives" -mindepth 1 -maxdepth 1 -mtime +30 -print
