Open GitLab links in your work browser profile on Mac

Why give it its own rule

On GitLab.com, access is granted per group, and company groups often enforce SAML SSO tied to your work identity. If the browser that opens the link is signed in to your personal GitLab account, merge request links from your team bounce to a sign-in or access-denied page.

How to set it up

  1. Install ChooseBrowser and pick it in System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Default web browser.
  2. In ChooseBrowser, add a rule for the hosts below and choose the browser and profile (profiles of Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi and Chromium need a one-time local setup in the app).
  3. From then on, these links open straight in that browser from any app; links without a rule show the picker.

Hosts to add

  • gitlab.com

Split by path

  • gitlab.com/your-group

Add a rule for gitlab.com that opens your everyday browser, then a path rule for gitlab.com/your-group that opens the work profile of Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi or Chromium. Merge requests, pipelines and issues all live under the group path, so one path rule covers them. If your company also runs a self-hosted GitLab on its own domain, add that host as another work rule.

Check that it works

Open a merge request from gitlab.com/your-group and check that the work profile opens and the avatar menu shows your work account; then open one of your personal project URLs and confirm it goes to the other browser.
