Gemini CLI ~/.gemini/tmp/bin: safe to delete?

Safe to deleteRegenerated automatically; Thermo deletes it outright.

Where it is

  • ~/.gemini/tmp/bin

What it is

Google's Gemini CLI stores its per-user state in ~/.gemini. The tmp/bin folder holds helper executables the CLI downloads for its own tools, kept separately from your chat data.

Why it gets so big

It's rarely huge, but it's pure cache: nothing in it is unique to you, so there's no reason to keep stale copies around.

Is it safe to delete?

Yes. The CLI downloads what it needs again on the next run. This folder is separate from the per-project chat history and checkpoints stored elsewhere under ~/.gemini/tmp, which are worth reviewing on their own before you delete them.

See how much space it uses

du -sh "$HOME/.gemini/tmp/bin" 2>/dev/null

Delete it by hand

Run in Terminal. Deleting cannot be undone, so check the paths first.

rm -rf "$HOME/.gemini/tmp/bin"/*
